The 2011 award ceremony took place on December 4 in the historic merchants' hall in Freiburg, where Andrus Ansip and Valdis Dombrovskis were awarded the International Prize of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung and Rainer Hank received the Publishing Prize of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung.

While Europe was still grappling with the after-effects of the euro crisis and questions of central control and national sovereignty were being debated, the topicality of Hayek's warnings about the risks of excessive economic intervention became apparent. The Arab Spring, which shook the political landscape of the Middle East and North Africa in 2011, also highlighted the importance of individual freedom, which Hayek saw as the cornerstone of stable and prosperous societies.
