The award ceremony on November 6, 2005 in the historic merchants' hall in Freiburg reflected the economic and political challenges in Europe, in particular the debates on economic integration and the competitiveness of the European Union.

In this context, the foundation honoured Mario Monti, who as EU Competition Commissioner had provided important impetus for strengthening competition and market liberalization, with the International Prize of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung. Karen Horn was awarded the Publishing Prize of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung for her journalistic contributions to the communication of liberal economic ideas.
