The first award ceremony of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung took place on July 1, 2001 at the concert hall at the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin. Leszek Balcerowicz was awarded the International Prize of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung for his services to the economic transformation of Poland. Hans D. Barbier received the Publishing Prize of the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung for his contributions to the dissemination of liberal economic ideas.

This first event laid the ground for the Hayek Foundation's long-term legacy and underlined the relevance of Hayek's theories in the face of the challenges of the early 2000s.
